Holistic Approach in Mental Health Treatment

Medications can help with mental health issues. However, they cannot fix the underlying problems, which are often caused by unexpected life changes, trauma, dietary deficiencies, and physical and social factors. Holistic treatment gets to the root of mental health problems.

Before starting treatment, we understand how all your body systems and lifestyle factors interact. We examine your lifestyle, relationships, family history, physical, psychological, and spiritual factors, as well as your economic circumstances, so we know how they all affect you.

What Others Have to Say

"I wanted to thank you dearly for the past couple years, as you have really helped me come into my own. I was completely and totally lost after flunking out of college twice, and I wouldn't say I'm perfect now, but you've helped me come such a long way from that place.

Your medicinal help certainly played a major part, but conversations with you guided me even more so. You're a truly wonderful psychiatrist, but a truly wonderful person first.

I hope we cross paths sometime in the future, but for now, best of luck with ALTA's new paths and thank you so much for the past two years, Alissa."

All You Want to Learn About Mental Health

Which mental health providers work at ALTA MH?

ALTA MH providers include board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners, health coaches, and women’s health nurse practitioners licensed in Massachusetts.

What does a health coach do?

Coaches look at everything from the mind and body to work-life balance, sleep, spirituality, physical activity, nutrition, relationships, and the environment.

They help you understand which aspects of a healthy lifestyle you need to focus on for a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner diagnose?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners can assess, diagnose, prescribe medication, and treat mental health patients.

What is the difference between a psychiatric nurse and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

Psychiatric nurses and psychiatric nurse practitioners both work with people with mental health issues, but their training and scope of practice are different.

A psychiatric nurse provides nursing care and support within a healthcare team, while a psychiatric nurse practitioner has advanced training and can diagnose, treat, and manage mental health conditions, including prescribing medication and providing therapy.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry, while psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who specialize in mental health.

Both can diagnose and treat mental health conditions, but their approaches and services may differ. Which one you choose depends on your needs, your preferences, and the availability of specialists.

What does a psychiatric nurse practitioner do at ALTA MH?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) provide:

  • Evaluation and diagnosis

  • Therapy and counseling, including CBT, psychoeducation, mindfulness, breathing techniques, and meditation

  • Treatment plans

  • Medication prescriptions

  • Medical referrals

What does a women’s health nurse practitioner do?

The focus of women's health nurses is on common health concerns for women, especially during pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting.

Do I need a psychiatric nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, mental health therapist or psychologist?

It depends on what you need. If you need medication, you might start with a psychiatric nurse practitioner or a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists diagnose and treat mental health issues, including prescribing medication, but their main focus is usually managing medications.

For therapy or counseling without medication, you can see a mental health therapist or psychologist, or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. A therapist can help with a lot of mental health issues, but they do not usually prescribe medication. A psychologist offers therapy and psychological testing to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, but they do not prescribe medication.

If you need both therapy and medication management, they are offered by the same provider – a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

The first step to getting the right mental health treatment is getting evaluated by one of these professionals.
